A new corps of officers of the Legislative Press Pool at the Capitol Building has been inducted into office.

The officers were sworn in last Friday in the ball room of the Legislature and the program saw the launch of an intellectual discourse in honor of the late veteran legislative broadcaster Isaac Alvin Fiske known as the Alvin Fiske Legislative discourse.

During Friday's induction ceremony, the Alvin Fiske fund drive was launched by Montserrado District Five Representative Edwin Snowe and Mr. Simeon Freeman, head of the Consolidated Group and presidential candidate in the upcoming 2011 general and presidential elections. A total of over US$2,000 was raised both in cash and pledges.

Senate Pro-Tempore Cletus Wotorson of Grand Kru County served as the guest speaker. He cautioned the Liberian media against what he called unprofessional reporting.
Senator Wotorson called on media petitioners not to get involved in negative reporting of unimportant issues. Rather, he challenged them to take objective posture on national issues based on research.

He urged the inducted officers to always engage positively with lawmakers in the interest of Liberia while carrying out their reportage at the first branch of government.

The National Elections Commission (NEC) has issued a strong warning against individuals who will pose as citizens of Liberia to participate in the 2011 elections.

Responding to a question on the possibility of foreigners part-taking in the country's electoral process, Commission's Chairman James Fromayan, said even though the Commission was not expecting anyone to pose as Liberian citizen for the sole purpose of participating in the elections, the possibility could not be ruled out. He said people who do that during the electioneering period would be arrested and prosecuted. “This action is criminal and any individual who is involved will be treated as such,” he said.

Speaking Friday at the launch of the National Voters' Registration Exercise, the NEC Chairman noted that according to Section 3.1 of the New Elections Law of 1986: “Every citizen of Liberia who has attained the age of 18 or older may register as a voter, except one that has been judicially declared to be incompetent or of unsound mind or who has been disenfranchised as a result of conviction of an infamous crime and has not been restored to citizenship.”
